Notes
General:
George Deacon Shipley, my great great grandfather, was born to Georg e Shipley and Mary Ann (nee Deacon) on 29th December 1835. His birt h record shows his birthplace as Hillfields ( a suburb of Coventry ) and according to the I.G.I. he was christened on 29th December 183 5 at Holy Trinity, Coventry. However, on the 1881 census he has pu t that he came from Great Bowden, Leicester. Presumably that was wher e he was brought up for, in 1841, the census record for Great Bowde n shows him living with James Deacon ( his grandfather) Anne ( his s tep-grandmother) , Joseph (his uncle) aged 20 and Louisa Deacon age d 6 months in Great Bowden. He may have been living with them becau se his father was absent, having been transported to Tasmania four ye ars previously in 1837. The whereabouts of his mother at that time a re not known. George Deacon married Emma Fletcher , a spinster fro m Calverton, Nottingham, i n March 1861. His address was 83, High St reet, Litchurch: Emma's was ? Road, Litchurch. They married in a co ngregationalist school chapel in Derby. On the marriage certificate h is occupation was given as "book keeper". They had seven children . In 1863, when Sidney Russel was born, 1865 when Cecil Edgar was bor n and 1867 when Gertrude was born, the family lived in Alvaston, Sha rdlow, Derby. George Deacon was then a railway clerk. A daughter Miri am was born in 1864 (FS) or 1861(KC) , place unknown. Apparently she d ied aged either 12 or 17. In 1869 when George Hubert was born, the y lived at Clarkson street, Ipswich : George Deacon's occupation a t that time was "warehouse clerk". Another daughter, Ethel, was also b orn in Ipswich in 1873 and their last child, Miriam, was born in Lond on, Bow Rd. in 1877. The 1881 census shows most of the family living a t Breachwood Greeen, Kings Walden, Hertford. Marion is not mentioned . (It is thought that she would have died by then) George Hubert the n aged 11 was living with his aunts Jane and Fanny at Burton Latime r and Sidney Russell, my great grandfather, then aged 18 , was a b oarder at a bakers in Holdenhurst, Hampshire. (His grandfather and gr eat grandfather had been bakers and Sidney followed in their footstep s and went on to become a master baker and confectioner - his sons al so continued in the profession). This census shows that George Deaco n had become a Baptist Evangelist preacher! An entry in the parish re cords of Breachwood Green Baptist Church says; "In 1880 Rev. G.D. Shi pley of Bournemouth came at the request of the Church to hold an evan gelist mission........" The family left Breachwood Green after 8 ye ars. At present I have no information as to where they went next; Pos sibly they came to Bristol. (according to Kathleen Carr they went t o Highfields) A letter from theThe Rev. Preb. Cecil Gange Shiple y ( a grandson of George Deacon's) says that George Deacon is burie d at Marcham. Confirmed by KC - they went to Marcham in 1897 where h e lived until his death. However his death was registered in Warmley , Bristol, England by his grandson, Albert George Shipley HARRIS (so n of Miriam SHIPLEY and Albert HARRIS) From a letter written by Ce cil Edgar Shipley, son of George Deacon Shipley: In 1857 he went t o Derby and worked for the Midland Railway. In 1858 he became a christ ian. In 1869 he went to Ipswich as City Missioner. in 1874 he went t o Swanage as City Missioner. In 1876 he went to Kingston, Ringwood, Ha mpshire as a minister. in 1880 he went to Breachwood Green. in 1890 h e went to Highfields. In 1897 he went to Marcham. From: 'Parishes : Marcham', A History of the County of Berkshire: Volume 4 (1924), pp . 354-360. The Marcham Baptist chapel and minister's house are com prised in deeds dated respectively 20 May 1875 and 2 March 1893. The h ouse is occupied by the minister, who pays yearly 'a314 by way of rent , which is applied for purposes connected with the chapel.
