Mother, age 75, surname Rowe, widow, born Gt Bowden Ma ry Ann Deacon, my great great great grandmother was born to James Deac on and Elizabeth in Great Bowden, Leicestershire. She married Georg e Shipley on 6th August 1834 at Great Bowden. He was a batchelor of t he parish of Burton Latimer and she was a spinster of Great Bowden. T he marriage was witnessed by Jane Shipley (George's sister) and Jame s Deacon . (It is assumed that James was Mary's brother - a James De acon was born at Great Bowden to James Deacon and Elizabeth in 1814) . George signed his name and Mary made her mark. Together they ha d one son, George Deacon, in December 1835. Mary's husband, George, w as convicted of larceny and transported for life to Tasmania in 1837 ; she is mentioned as "his bereaved wife" in George's mother's petiti on for clemency in 1847. She subsequently, and probably bigamousl y, married John Rowe, giving her father's name as Shipley (it was actu ally Deacon). Mary Ann's father's name is shown as James Shipley.
