In 1798 a George Shipley was a witness to a marriage at Burton Lati mer between Benjamin Elwood, a papermaker of Isham and Elizabeth Cole s of Burton Latimer. In November 1802 banns of his forthcoming marri age to Ann Smith were published at Burton Latimer by Rev S. Barwick a nd they married on 8th December 1802 in the church at Isham, Northant s. Together they had six children, all born at Burton Latimer. Two d ied at birth , the other four were all baptised at the Parish Churc h there. In 1813 his daughter, Fanny's record of baptism gives her fa ther's occupation as baker. By 1815 George was in prison in Northa mpton for debt. The London Gazette has an entry as follows: 18 Ma y 1815 p958 "By order of the Court for the Relief of Insolvent De btors - the Petition of George SHIPLEY, late of Burton Latimer in th e County of Northampton, Baker, but now a prisoner for debt confined i n His Majesty's Gaol of Northampton in the County of Northampton, wil l be heard." In 1837 a petition for clemency re. his son George ju nior (qv) states that Anne, George Junior's mother, was a widow, ther efore George senior must have died before that year. In 1868, on hi s widow's death certificate, his occupation was given as baker I hav e no further information about him at present. See notes re. Anne (Sm ith).
