Birth Notes:
Event Description: Chorlton on MedlockDeath Notes:
Event Description: 13 Cranbrook RoadGeneral:
George James Millman, my great grandfather, was born on January 2nd 18 69 to James Millman and Mary Wilkins in Charlton upon Medlock, Lancas hire. The 1891 census shows him living with his parents and sibling s at 59, Claremont St. Bristol. Also present was a visitor - John Jo nes, a grocer's assistant, aged 21, born Swansea, Glamorgan. George' s occupation was given as cabinet upholsterer. George James married E mma Rich in Swansea, Glamorgan on 4th October 1891 - the witnesses we re Mary Ann Sewell and John Emmanuel Jones - almost certainly the "v isitor" shown at George's home in Bristol in the census earlier tha t year. On the birth certificate of Marie Rosa in 1896 George's occ upation was given as master upholsterer. At that time the family wer e living at 36, Bond St. Swansea. According to family legend Marie wa s one of 12 children - I know of 11. Presumably the twelfth died young . My uncles were unaware that their mother had been born in Wales alt hough they thought that their grandfather, George James, came from t here - which he didn't! By 1900 the family were living in Bristo l - George James was an upholsterer at 14 St. Pauls St. and by 1921 h e had a wholesale business at 28, Newfoundland St. called Milbury's a nd the family residence was at 71, Springfield Rd. Cotham. Apparentl y the business flourished under a labour government in the post-war ye ars as they made "utility" furniture - most of George's sons went int o the business. From 1951 trade declined due to the expansion of maj or companies and it finally closed in the late 1960s.Marriage Notes (Emma Rich GGM)
[RS] Could 'Milburys' have been a partnership Mill(man) and (?)--bury?
