On the outbreak of w ar he was posted to HMS Foxglove (mine sweeper) and was engaged with t he Channel Patrol. He afterwards served in the North Sea. He was awa rded the Distinguished Service Medal for conspicuous gallantry at se a and was mentioned in despatches in July 1915. He also holds the Que en's South African Medal, the 1914-1815 Star, the General Service an d Victory medals, and was recommended for the Mine-sweeping Medal.
