Notes
A Mystery
There's a marriage record indicating that Rose Emily Hawthorne married Alexander George Scott on 19 August 1907.

Rose describes herself as 'married - 3 years' in the 1911 census . This ties in with her marriage to Alexander George Scott, but in this census she states her surname is Balnaves, not Scott.

YH says her uncle was known as Ernie Balnaves and her cousin's father had a document stating that Alexander Ernest Scott 'would henceforth be known as Alexander Ernest Balnaves'.

Follow-up needed - is the document still extant and is it dated?

There's evidence in various archives of the existence of a person named Alexander George Balnaves who was born in 1882. Does this name change mean that Alexander George Scott and Alexander George Balnaves are the same person? There's no trace of Alexander George Scott anywhere else in the archives before or after his wedding to Rose, nor is there any record of Rose marrying (or re-marrying) anyone named Balnaves prior to 1911. Are the shared first names of both these men a clue?

The birth of Rose's first child so soon after her marriage might imply that Alexander George Balnaves, if we presume he is the father, felt for some reason he needed to disguise his true identity when the marriage took place.

Rose states she is married, not widowed, in the 1911 census. She also states she has had two children, one of which has died. Finally she lists one son, Alexander Ernest Balnaves, but there is no husband listed. If her husband wasn't dead presumably he was absent, as might be the case if he was away, for example at sea. Alexander Scott is described as a ship's steward on his marriage certificate. Alexander Balnaves is described as a sailor in two of his citations.

UPDATE 10 September 2020

I've found a marriage record for Alexander George Balnaves paternal aunt, Marie Ann Balnaves. She married William Mackenzie Scott on 27 May 1877 at St Paul Church, Bow Common, London, England. Is it possible this surname was subsequently borrowed by AGK?
